Wealth and Discipleship · Gospels Only

What did Jesus tell the rich young ruler to do with his wealth?

The three Synoptic Gospels record Jesus telling a rich ruler to sell what he had, give to the poor, and follow him.

Direct answer

Jesus told the ruler to sell what he had, give the proceeds to the poor, and follow him. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all preserve that command and the man’s sorrowful response.

In Matthew, the man asks what he still lacks after saying that he has kept the commandments. Jesus answers with a concrete sequence: sell his possessions, give to the poor, receive treasure in heaven, and follow him. Mark and Luke report the same core instruction, with Mark adding that Jesus looked at the man and loved him.

The encounter does not end with a general compliment about generosity. The man leaves sorrowful because he has great possessions, and Jesus immediately warns his disciples about the difficulty riches create for entering God’s Kingdom. The narrative therefore connects the command to discipleship and to the spiritual hold of wealth.

These passages establish what Jesus said to this particular ruler. By themselves, they do not settle every later debate about whether all followers must liquidate every possession in exactly the same way. What they do make difficult to avoid is the severity of Jesus’s warning: wealth can resist the call to follow, and care for the poor is central to the command he gives here.

    The rich young man

He said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder.’ ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ‘You shall not steal.’ ‘You shall not offer false testimony.’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ And, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” The young man said to him, “All these things I have observed from my youth. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions. Jesus said to his disciples, “Most certainly I say to you, a rich man will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven with difficulty. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter into God’s Kingdom.”

    One thing you lack

As he was going out into the way, one ran to him, knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one—God. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not give false testimony,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and mother.’” He said to him, “Teacher, I have observed all these things from my youth.” Jesus looking at him loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross.” But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into God’s Kingdom!”

    Sell all that you have

A certain ruler asked him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus asked him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good, except one: God. You know the commandments: ‘Don’t commit adultery,’ ‘Don’t murder,’ ‘Don’t steal,’ ‘Don’t give false testimony,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’” He said, “I have observed all these things from my youth up.” When Jesus heard these things, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was very rich.
